3 Trends That Prove Personality is Back in the Kitchen

If you're never considered purple in the kitchen, think again. This subtle pop of purple cabinetry makes a bold statement in this otherwise neutral kitchen. Though Tyler Karu chose to cover a small portion of the wall in tile, the main star of this Saco, Maine, kitchen is the shiplap wall covering, which adds texture and coziness to the room.

CONNECTION TO THE GARDEN

A thin ledge for spices is topped by a wider one for bigger tools. Their natural wood finish work with the warm brass accents and Roman shades to make this space feel inviting. It's a nice zone in the open kitchen that still feels like a cohesive part of the design.

Porcelain Pendant Lights

Though we love stick-on tile and removable wallpaper, Sara Toufali of Black and Blooms created a mini garden in her rental kitchen to bring some life into the space. "For example, families with young children or frequent kitchen-users should look for durable, long-lasting, low-maintenance materials," Moore says. "If you cook on the stove often, choose a backsplash that’s easy to clean. If you’re building a custom kitchen, design your cabinet layout based on how you use the kitchen." A dish rack, open shelving, and a playful backsplash shape all make for a kitchen that scores highly on charm. Bonus points for function by way of custom cabinets, built-in seating, and well-positioned lighting. The great big picture windows in her Minnesota kitchen required Wit & Delight founder Kate Arends to sacrifice wall space, which ended up being worth it for the natural light and forest views.

Relaxed Luxury

These leather chairs have a high enough back to offer support, while still lending an industrial-chic vibe to the space. So often we forget that a kitchen can be beautiful as well as functional. In this Union Square abode, Proem Studio added personal touches like a lamp (perfect for reading recipes) and leaning art to make a gorgeous kitchen a little homier.

High-use glassware and recipe books now get prime real estate out in the open. The image below is from one of my projects, but again, featuring the British brand, Clive Christian. Plate racks have always been a highly coveted feature of a Clive Christian kitchen.

Painting the chairs and legs of the dining table the same as the cabinetry paint color keeps the look cohesive. As for the window, it’s kept bare of drapery and accented by a simple canvas cushion on the window seat to highlight the purity of the architecture. “The soft pinks are anchored by dark colors for a ‘Wes Anderson-meets-Provençal’ look,” says Chris. The bespoke deep green color was mixed especially for this project, and the wicker pendants are from Iconic Lights, to add a tactile note.

Designers & Inspiration

'Prioritize a traditional range oven if you can, it’s the focal point to many an English kitchen and will evoke the warm and welcoming atmosphere synonymous with this style,' adds Naked Kitchens' Elizabeth Sherwin. The stove is at the heart of an English kitchen and serves as the focal point for the kitchen, for all the congregate around. In a very traditional, country English kitchen, you'll find a cast-iron AGA range or Rangemaster occupying real estate in between classic cabinetry. What is the most expensive part of a luxury kitchen?

Our showroom in New York City’s Greenwich Village is located in a 19th C brownstone at 51 East 10th Street. In Spring 2023 we opened the Garden Floor downstairs to join our original upstairs showroom, doubling the size and offering of what is on display. Thanks to enough white space to break everything up, the end result is sleek, sophisticated, and polished. While some might fear clutter, take this as an opportunity to embrace it. The mix of sizes, colors, and styles packing these open shelves gives a collected feel to this bright and airy kitchen.

Be Smart About Materials

Suddenly, the folksy neutrals the modern farmhouse trend popularized feel dreary and sterile. No longer are we interested in a space that looks like it’s been plucked from a new-build brochure. Instead, we want color, pattern—personality—in our homes to remind us we’re alive. And thankfully, that’s what three new kitchen trends are all about.

Landscape architect Elisa Read Pappaterra filled the center fountain with cascading succulents. Cynthia Silverman created a nursery fit for a prince or princess, incorporating golden accents and whimsical touches, such as the hot-air balloon light and animal figurines. Designer Ashleigh Miranda focused on juxtaposing technology and earthy elements in her moody media room. Designer Karen Billman made Dunn-Edwards’s Skipping Stones the star of her cheery sunroom.

Many English farmhouse kitchens feature cozy dining areas, such as a rustic farmhouse table or a built-in breakfast nook. These spaces are perfect for enjoying a leisurely meal with family and friends, enhancing the kitchen’s welcoming atmosphere. English farmhouse kitchens often feature warm, inviting colors that reflect the natural beauty of the countryside. Think soft creams, warm browns, and muted greens, which create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Hand-painted floors were the jumping-off point for designer Amy Peltier’s soothing primary bedroom design. “It was so much work, but it turned out beautiful.” The firm wanted the space to feel “light and airy and breezy,” and incorporated fabrics and wall coverings by Thibaut in a soft color palette.

This furniture is really well suited to large homes with high ceilings, it has a grandeur about it but also a simplicity that enables it to work in sculleries, boot rooms and utilities as well as kitchens. Every piece of furniture feels substantial and is handmade from solid hardwood so it’s tough and strong too. These cupboards are a true piece of England, they are wonderfully elegant and charming in a practical way. Looking to the past for inspiration is such a clever way to furnish your home, it ensures an enviable restraint which is the key to great design. If you’re tired of the super sleek, whitewashed kitchen aesthetic, may we suggest taking a cue from the English?

I always think it’s nice when you can soften the lines of cabinetry a bit. In a kitchen design, there are so many hard lines & right angles, as well as hard surfaces. With too many rounded corners, it makes the kitchen look like it belongs on a yacht! We paint the interiors and exteriors of our cabinets using water based paints, which are brush applied to all the exterior surfaces.
